Verb Predicates, Meaning and Multilinguality

چکیده
This paper summarizes some of the research on verb predicates that has taken place at the University of Central Florida during the last few years. It also describes how this research may be related to the MEANING project. The point is made that the de nition of predicates linked to a general ontology, such as that of WordNet, and to grammatical relations can solve the crucial issues of verb and prepositional meaning and thematic roles. Also, it is suggested that a broad ontology of predicates, which would be language-free as far as ontological categories is concerned, could be extended relatively easy to other languages, resulting into ontologies of predicates similar to the di erent \wordnets" that have emerged from WordNet. This ontology of predicates could facilitate multilingual tasks such as information retrieval and machine translation, as well as deeper monolingual natural language processing tasks, such as under-

Nominal and Clausal Event Predicates
In this paper, I argue that not only PPs and adverbs can act as predicates of the event argument of the verb, but certain NPs and certain clauses can, as well. I will give syntactic and semantic arguments that NPs that are cognate objects and clauses of (at least some) nonbridge verbs are optional predicates of the event argument of the verb. With respect to clauses, I will argue that for indep...
متن کاملMining Complex Predicates In Hindi Using A Parallel Hindi-English Corpus
Complex predicate is a noun, a verb, an adjective or an adverb followed by a light verb that behaves as a single unit of verb. Complex predicates (CPs) are abundantly used in Hindi and other languages of Indo Aryan family. Detecting and interpreting CPs constitute an important and somewhat a difficult task. The linguistic and statistical methods have yielded limited success in mining this data....
متن کاملComplex Predicates in Telugu: A Computational Perspective
Complex predicates raise the question of how to encode them in computational lexicons. Their computational implementation in South Asian languages is in its infancy. This paper examines in detail the variety of complex predicates in Telugu revealing the syntactic process of their composition and the constraints on their formation. The framework used is First Phase Syntax (Ramchand 2008). In thi...

متن کاملAutomatic Semantic Annotation of Texts
This paper explains the automatic semantic interpretation of sentences. These sentences were selected for testing the verb predicates that we have been defining for WordNet 1.6 verb classes, and the algorithm that uses them. Semantic interpretation is performed for determining the meaning of the verb, or, verb predicate, its semantic roles, adjuncts, the attachment of postverbal prepositional p...
